Valley View Rotary Update

Weekly update for 8/25/2010

If you missed today’s meeting, then you missed my story of how I met Big Bird, Elmo, and Prairie Dawn from Sesame Street at Riverside Park.

We welcomed our new exchange student from Finland, Riina Maria Bhatia.  If anyone has a cell phone she can use or are willing to let her be part of your calling plan (you would be reimbursed), please let me know.

Today’s program was an extremely informative presentation by Mary Kay Wolfe and Noelle Weber of the YWCA.  Started in1906, the YWCA has a staff of 17 and serves 1500-2000 annually in the Coulee Region. They stressed how important community support is. Their programs are social service related and are summarized below:

  • CASA For  Kids is a program where trained volunteers make sure at-risk kids are in a safe environment.

  •  A-PRO provides a program and equipment for those who are limited physically such as adaptive skiing, hand cycling and swimming.

  • Adaptive gardening is located in Holmen

  • Swim Club is for boys and girls age 5-18

  • Transitional housing is for the homeless and single with children

  • Restorative Justice allows victim and defendant to come together and also includes those with truancy issues

  • Women’s Community Based Housing is an alternative to jail

  • Ruth House is an emergency shelter for drug and alcohol abuse. Maximum stay is 90 days.

  • Employment Training
